Can Augmented Reality be the next big thing in tourism of Sri Lanka

What is Augmented Reality(AR)?

Basically Augmented Reality of an integration of user's environment with a digitally created objects. So is it same as VR? no its not. In Virtual Reality, it crates a full artificial environment, but in Augmented Reality it uses the existing environment and lay digitally created layer on top of it. The history of AR goes back to 1901. Back then author L. Frank Baum who well known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz came with the idea of an electronic display that overlays data onto real life. But the society came to notice this awesome technology with the one night success Pokemon Go. Let me say "gaming is not the only field that can be benefited by AR", so we are today to explore one another aspect.

How AR works?

Technically AR applications can be divided to two components, Marker Base and Marker less.

Marker Base: Here the physical-world symbols are used as reference for digitally        generated graphics. An example for this was demonstrated  by MINI few years ago.

Marker Less: The technology of 'mobile augmented reality' born with this approach by   adding some essence of AR to mobile devices as smart phones and tablets. This method uses device's accelerometer, compass and GPS to determine user's location. Then the collected data will be analyzed to determine what the device is looking at. Based on that digital graphics will be generated on device's screen.

 So how Tourism?

Hope you have traveled to ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. There you can see thousands of artifacts of ancient work of arts. But due to the time spend and enemy raids at most of places only few stone pillars are left. And there are no even a plaque to explain what the place really is. But from using Augmented Reality Technology we can give a whole new travelling experience for travelers.

So basically the application should be like this. When a traveler come near to a archaeological important place a massage should be displayed in their smart device screen. Then when the traveler points his or her smart device's camera towards the artifacts, a digitally generated graphic layer should be appear on top of real world environment and show how the original establishment was thousands years ago.

So we can built a virtual thousand year ago environment on top of real world and it will be a brand new experience for travelers.

Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. ... Augmented reality apps are written in special 3D programs that allow the developer to tie animation or contextual digital information in the computer program to an augmented reality "marker" in the real world.
